Often times I ignore unannounced people at my door. I get a knock on the door yesterday, and I'm thinking that it is UPS, or USPS cause I was expecting a few packages. Nope, neither. Some young dude at the door in the middle of the day looking as if he has an offering. I said, what I said. I don't even remember what I said. His ass turned and walked off when I said, what I said. It aint no telling what I said, cause my mouth is like that of a child, or of an elder that has had "enough" of sugar coating the theatrics of people experiencing life. So I have been known to say the appropriate thing at the most inappropriate time without giving a what, about it. Quite honestly, and quite frequently, it is humor involved.
My car has been in the shop for about a week now, so the look of the house may appear to be empty as if there is no one home, because it is the middle of the day, and many of the surrounding houses are occupied with elderly, disabled, and 9 to 5ers. So the appearance can seem to be an easy target for a person that is scouting, or has scouted the neighborhood. Trust, these days, somebody always watching. Both on and offline.
So this leads me to this...
If someone knocks on your door or rings your doorbell, be sure to make your presence known. Slick people, have strategies that they implore when they wanna get into your spot without your permission. I'd venture to say that many home invasions begin with this tactic. The person will come to a house soliciting something, only to pretend that they had the wrong address, or something similar. Their goal is simply to find out if someone is home.
When I was a youth my granny would leave me alone in the house for a few hours while she went to church. I did this beginning in my late elementary years. Of course, I was told not to go to the door, and given certain family members numbers to call. Funny thing, I don't recall being told to dial 911. So enough of the back in the day talk. It is 2016. A different time, and a different era with advanced criminal strategies. As a result, we as a collective should implore the right reasoning with our children that is appropriate for the times of this era.
If there are young people, and women that are home alone I'm suggesting that they make their presence known to a potential intruder. Be prepared. I am not suggesting that you unlock, or open any doors. Simply say something! As a child, teach them the words that would be appropriate for your household, and your situation. If I had children, I'd have them say something funny!
My dad is crazy, and he has a serious gun collection. He'll be right down. Besides, humor has a way of diffusing a lot of situations
The point of it all is to be aware, and be prepared. This is certainly not to invoke any fear, but to simply have an action plan. I am a firm believer that if you stay ready, then you don't have to get ready.
